Tributary of the Tagus on the right bank. It is born in the Salamancan town of Frades de la Sierra and runs in a southwest direction for 205 kilometers until it ends at the Tagus River at the height of Alcántara.
It is the longest tributary of the Tagus basin in Spain.
The main Extremaduran towns that cross its channel are those of Coria and Montehermoso.
It also crosses protected natural areas such as the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park and the Canchos de Ramiro.
Its main tributaries are the rivers Árrago, Los Angeles, Ambroz and Jerte.
There are three reservoirs in its channel: Gabriel and Galán, Guijo of Granadilla and Valdeobispo.
